Barbara Hume Clothing and Textile Designer

Barbara Hume is a San Francisco based designer where she retails her clothing via trunk shows and her Eureka Valley salon. Her timeless apparel collections feature her trademark hand woven jackets and classically inspired feminine styles. Her aesthetic speaks with conviction to women living and traveling in Mediterranean and urban climes, Casual, versatile and elegant, Barbara’s thoughtful approach to design incorporates season-less styles that integrate and build upon past and future collections.

Hume has had a lifelong love affair with textiles. After her first exposure to weaving, a transformative moment, she began a serious exploration of fiber, cloth, textile design, costume and their context in the world. As an artist smitten with the possibilities of using a loom, Barbara began incorporating her original textiles into clothing. She traveled to the California Bay Area in the early 80’s and worked in the fashion industry for over 10 years as a design assistant to several designers, most notably Marian Clayden. Marian Clayden Inc., was a regional design firm in Los Gatos, Ca where the signature look, hand dyed, cut velvet dresses, were sold to luxury stores throughout the United States, London and Tokyo.

As a continuation of striving to produce a consciously differentiating, quality and aesthetically outstanding product for women she manages a small atelier where the hand woven fabric is developed, the styles are designed for a particular woman, and sold through an intimate yet safe environment. Barbara’s respect and solutions for the 21st century’s woman’s needs are an integral part of her mission statement, commitment and practicing philosophy.
